From the President

It won't be long, folks, before my tour of duty is over.  To make this happen, I need all of you to come to the May meeting and cast your ballot.

I know, I know -- you hate to see me go.  But if there's one thing in life that's certain, it's that change is unavoidable.  So it is with SONOPP.  And for that change to take place, we have to elect a new slate of officers.

Fortunately, the Board and I have been hard at work creating such a slate.  So, without further ado, here it is:

Chairman of the Board – Robert Neldon
President – Terry Biacsi
Vice President – Linda Ford
Treasurer – John Biacsi
Secretary – Dale Kincaid
Directors – David Neldon
                   Karen Neldon
                   Bill Ford
                   Patrick Rice
                   Bill Morley

This slate will be read at the April 28 meeting, just before Patrick Abel's presentation.  Nominations from the floor may also be given, after which the vote will be taken.

Wow!  What a deal!  At one meeting, a chance to shape the future of SONOPP and also hear a presentation from Patrick Abel!  Ya gotta be there!

And please let our Executive Secretary know you're coming, so that the room is big enough.  The Holiday Inn wants to know if we'll need the ballroom again...

April 28 Meeting

Weddings: The Art and the Business
by Patrick Abel

This presentation will focus on two things: The Art and Business of wedding photography.  To be a successful wedding photographer in the modern age you need both.

The Art: Great art has been around for thousands of years and Patrick will cover what makes great art and how that translates to great wedding photography.  Quality of light, elegance of pose & timing of the moment will be covered in detail.  Patrick has traveled extensively looking for answers to the question of how photography is a modern day expression of what has always been considered great art.

The Business: Managing a modern studio can be hard work; it is often harder than the photography itself.  Mistakes in our business can cost us our next job when our reputation is tarnished by bad organization.  Patrick has managed and shot for a medium size studio for over 10 years and has identified the key factors to successful management.  Set your priorities: 1) great art 2) get the business 3) produce what you promised (work-flow) 4) keep meticulous records 5) maintain the communication.

BIOGRAPHY: Patrick Abel, PPA Cert., M. Photog, started photographing as a young boy and developed a deep love for his camera's ability to capture the world as he moved though it.  Having earned a bachelor degree in business with concentrations in Computer Information Systems, General Business and Philosophy, he worked at IBM in Market Research and at the XEROX Corporation as an account executive where he learned solid business management skills.  In the early 90's he and a small group of photographers started a studio concentrating solely on high quality wedding photography.  Over the years this studio has grown because of its solid base of core principals and a never-ending drive to continue to produce new, fresh. and interesting images and products that tell the story of a couple's wedding day.

Check out Patrick's website www.specialmomentsusa.com, and see some of his images in our Gallery.  His studio shoots some 150+ weddings each year.  His innovations in workflow and studio management earned him an award as an IBM Success Story.  You’ll definitely want to see this program!

Kudos to SONOPP Members and Friends

Over the past few weeks, a number of individuals have stepped up to make posts and get our message across on a popular wedding forum for area brides and grooms.

The site www.cleveland.com/forums/wedding is visited by hundreds of brides and grooms each week.  Photographers Mark Madere and Dave Eggert each responded to questions from brides on the forum.  In addition, the owner of Neo Imaging, Bert Allmenger, and Tamron executive John VanSteenberg, both made posts to inform readers and debunk some of the misinformation being propagated by brides and part-time photographers.

All of these individuals should be commended for taking the time from their busy schedules to help ALL photographers.  The survival of professional photography is in question in these changing times.  More photographers need to be helping to defend our beliefs by making posts on this forum.

Speaking of message boards, here's another Commentary from one of SONOPP's quieter, more reserved members:

Monitoring Local Message Boards

By Patrick Rice

In this age of instant access to information, many of our potential clients are turning to local wedding message boards to help select their wedding photographer.  As members of SONOPP, it is important for all of us to monitor the activity on these boards for a number of reasons.  First, we all need to diligently watch to see if any SONOPP member is being unfairly slandered on one of these sites.  Because internet posts are made instantaneously, all of us need to log on to these sites a couple of times each day to limit the damage that some anonymous individual can cause.

Second, these message boards give each of us an opportunity to promote SONOPP to brides across the area and potentially across the country.  Please don’t take the attitude that “Patrick takes care of that and his posts on the message board are enough.”  I get criticized on the www.cleveland.com board for constantly promoting SONOPP.  SONOPP would have much more credibility on these boards if more photographers start making posts similar to mine that promote our association to these visitors to the site.

Last, these sites give each of us an opportunity to truly help area brides and grooms with all of their wedding planning.  Many of my posts are about DJs, reception facilities, florists and other vendors that they may be in need of.  We can make a positive impact on their planning and help them to have the wedding of their dreams.  Vendors are not permitted to make posts on www.theknot.com but we should still monitor what is being said on the board.  The Knot message board will remove posts if they are reported to them.  Vendors are permitted to post on the www.cleveland.com site.  Problem posts can be removed by clicking on the “Alert Us” button on the page.  The Cleveland.com wedding planner forum message board can be accessed directly at www.cleveland.com/forums/wedding.
