President's Message
Hello SONOPP members and guests. We had the largest attendance for a meeting
in a few years at this past month's program with Marci Allen. (Click here for
some scenes from that meeting.) Almost 40 photographers were inspired
by this energetic and successful studio owner.

SONOPP is pleased to announce that we are hosting a wedding seminar with our
very own Michelle Cantly. Michelle's rags to riches story is truly
inspirational. In just a few short years, she has grown into one of the
most successful wedding photography studios on the west side. Her program
will be held on Sunday, November 19th at a cost of only $39. By now you
should have received a couple of emails regarding this special event and even
seen the promotional postcard. Please show your support for Michelle and SONOPP by attending this informative program.
Our regular monthly meeting will be held on November 27th at Mackenzie's Grill.
This month, we host our Annual Print Competition. This is a great way to
test your images before sending them off to PPO, PPA and WPPI. In
addition, there are plenty of awards to be won which can be marketed to help
promote your studio. Even if you choose not to enter the competition, you
are certain to learn plenty from the judges' insightful critiques. (BTW,
the judges are Bob Williams, Darrell Moll, and John Worzell.) Don't
miss this great opportunity. (SONOPP members in good standing may study
four new documents pertaining to Print Competition by
clicking here.) And right around the corner is our Annual Holiday
Party, December 18. Call or email Terry Biacsi and let her know you'll be
there! Just click on her email address below!

This Month's Featured
Link
This month we have two links, one about our beloved Photoshop, and one a
pod-cast about a brand-new book.
Camels and Horses: Alternatives to Photoshop
--------------------------------------------
by Charles Maurer
Adobe Photoshop reminds me of a camel: a horse designed by a
committee. It is ungainly and awkward to control. It is
remarkably
useful - no other photo editor will do so much - but it is
not an
easy beast to ride.

This month's technique is called "The
Dark Flash Tool," for use when your image has an area
that's a little too bright. We'll set it up as an action,
so you can add it to your toolkit and apply it quickly. Here's what it
looks like in action: in the original image (1) the elderly woman's makeup
caused a slight overexposure of her face. To make Image 2, the retoucher
pressed Ctrl-F5 to launch the Dark Flash Tool, and then swished with the brush once over the face. Next he
pressed "x" to toggle the foreground color to black, pressed "0" to increase
the brush strength to 100%, and made the brush smaller by pressing "[" a few
times. He then dabbed once on the small forehead area above the nose to
restore the original. In all, a few seconds work.

Remember that SONOPP members have the privilege of viewing all
techniques (including previous ones) in
The Photoshop Corner, reserved
for Members Only. |

Rangefinder Publishing Launches New Educational Venue,
After Capture
It's not just a new magazine--it's a new
environment!
After months of planning and market analysis,
Rangefinder Publishing announced today the launch of an
entirely new venue in imaging education. Starting with
the first publication of After Capture magazine
in January, the new project will focus entirely on what
happens to an image after it's captured.
"The
market is completely fragmented with information on
everything from digital workflow to printing (both in
house and outsourced), marketing, storage, etc. There's
no single source to help photographers through the
process," commented Steve Sheanin, founder/CEO of
Rangefinder Publishing.
"After
Capture isn't just another magazine, but a complete
venue with website support, webinars, webcasts, podcasts
and an e-newsletter. It's all about education, and we're
ecstatic to bring this project to the market with the
same level of cutting-edge professionalism the market
has grown to expect from Rangefinder magazine
and WPPI," commented Skip Cohen, president of
Rangefinder Publishing.
"With the support of George Varanakis as publisher and
creator of the concept, there is no doubt in my mind
this new venue will soon represent the most dramatic,
cutting-edge approach to education in the industry,"
said Cohen.
