Neat Noise? What's that? I'm glad you asked. As you know, all
SONOPP Photographers are familiar with blur techniques that soften an image
except around the eyes, mouth, and perhaps the nose. Adds a touch of
glamour. But did you know you can do something similar, yet decidedly
different, with noise instead of blur?

Let's start with the image on the left. Open the Layers Palette and
drag the Background layer down to the Add New Layer icon
.
Now you have a duplicate of the Background layer to work with.
From the Filter menu select "Noise" and then "Median..." In the resulting
dialog box type 13 for the Radius and click OK.
Back to the Layers Palette, click the Add Vector Mask icon
.
Select a soft brush and make sure the foreground color is black. Press 4 to get 40% opacity and paint once over the girl's
eyes and eyebrows. Press 3 to get 30% opacity and paint once over the
girl's mouth. Press 2 to get 20% opacity and paint once over the girl's
nose.
Wanna see what you get? Just move your mouse over Patrick's face
and watch the little girl change. Particularly watch the change in
the fireplace and the change in the white part of her dress. (You have to
do it yourself to really appreciate the effect.)
As usual, you can adjust the opacity of the duplicate level to reduce the
effect. And how much masking to use is entirely up to you.
