The Role of Casinos for Asian Countries

Many people travel around the world to visit casino sites. Almost all Asian countries are rethinking their attitude towards gambling. The reason is the fact that casinos and other gambling establishments are steadily growing in legal states, which increases the country’s attractiveness to tourists.

Asian Casinos

Asians spend about $14 million a year on gambling. This phenomenon includes casino gambling, race and totalisator betting, lotteries, and all illegal gambling. They are estimated to spend $23 million per year in 2010. First, Asians’ interest in gambling is influenced by the mindset and disposition of their nations. They play a game in which they not only seek to win money but also to test their luck and destiny. The growing demand for gambling is also due to the rapid growth of Asian economies and the Chinese population in particular.

Local Government Law

State authorities are well aware of this. They see gambling as an additional source of income, employment for citizens, and a tourist attraction. Macau is a Chinese enclave where casinos are legal. They are also the main source of income for the authorities. More than 10 million tourists come to Macau every year to gamble and spend money on related services. This is also a great benefit for the state. Many people believe that casinos should be fully licensed.

Social Issues

Fear of social problems related to gambling, in one way or another, prevents politicians from taking steps to revise the gambling law. Some governments want to limit access to residents and place casinos in remote locations to reduce the negative social impact. Experts say this is not a solution, as bold Asians will continue to play in illegal casinos.

This notion is possible in countries with the most restrictive gambling laws. There is always the possibility to travel to neighboring countries and win money there. Thailand is a good example because their casinos are not allowed. Right on the border with neighboring Cambodia, about twenty casinos await the most daring Thais. Proponents of legalizing casinos and other forms of gambling say that those with gambling problems already have them. Legalizing casinos will bring the issues to light. This point is much better than not knowing what is going on.

Gambling Effects

Representatives of authorities in Asian countries researched to find out the impact of gambling on their populations. They visited the world’s entertainment centers, such as Atlantic City and Las Vegas, to see the necessity and inevitability of legalizing casinos. Virtually all major casinos have claimed a claim in the Asian gambling market. These include companies that own mega-resorts in Las Vegas, as well as companies from Australia, South Africa, and Europe.
